It was half a year ago that Okada-san and I made the plan to go up the mountain. Elevation one thousand six hundred metres, a four-hour path to the summit. When we set out from the trailhead at eight, it was a pleasant clear morning. The weather forecast said only that it would break up from the afternoon.

As we climbed, the wind grew stronger. From some time after eleven, fog came in, and the figure of Okada-san walking ahead of me grew indistinct. Okada-san injured his knee last year. Every time he climbed over a rock, I could see him put a hand on his right knee. When I asked about the pain, he answered only, "Still fine."

At twelve twenty we rested in front of a sign that said forty minutes more to the summit. The fog had thickened, and I could not see a rock ten metres ahead. Okada-san's pain seemed to have grown worse after he sat down. I looked at the map and my watch and said, "I think there is nothing for it but to turn back." "After coming all this way," said Okada-san, but I set the two things side by side: his knee, and wanting to get down before it grew dark.

The path down, once we had decided to give up, was long. Okada-san went down still saying nothing. At a place where the rock was wet, I held his arm to steady him. After three it began to rain: although it had been clear in the morning, the weather turned earlier than forecast. At ten past four we reached the trailhead safely.

Okada-san bought two cans of coffee from the vending machine and handed one to me. "Next month, once more," was all he said. No thanks were offered, and I did not look for any. Heavier than the tiredness in my body was having said that one sentence out loud in the fog. There is no photograph of the summit, but there is a plan for next month.
