N3 consolidation story #159. Every June the narrator's aunt sends a box of plums from her field. He ruined the first batch four years ago and has been quietly buying pickled plums at a shop ever since. This year the box comes with a letter asking him to teach a neighbour's daughter how it is done. Patterns: 〜ことにしている, 〜ものの, とおりに, たところ, 〜というより, ないうちに.

Every year when June comes, my aunt sends a box of plums picked in the field at her house. She used to pickle them herself and send them, but for the last four years I have been the one receiving them. Since I ruined the whole batch the first year, I have made a point of packing pickled plums bought at a shop nearby into a jar and sending them at New Year. It is a secret I have not told my aunt.

今年ことしも箱はこが届とどいた。開あけると手紙てがみが入はいっていて、「近所きんじょの安西あんざいさんの娘むすめさんに漬つけ方かたを教おしえてやってほしい」と書かいてあった。断ことわる理由りゆうを考かんがえたものの、いい言いい訳わけは浮うかばなかった。

This year the box arrived as well. When I opened it there was a letter inside: "Please teach Anzai-san's daughter in the neighbourhood how to pickle them." Although I thought about a reason to refuse, no decent excuse came to mind.

とにかく本ほんを二冊にさつ買かって、書かいてあるとおりに梅うめを洗あらった。皮かわに傷きずのあるものを分わけて、塩しおと梅うめを重かさねていく。三日目みっかめに酢すを少すこし加くわえた。叔母おばの畑はたけの梅うめは皮かわが厚あつい。

Anyway, I bought two books and washed the plums exactly as it was written. I sorted out the ones with bruised skin, and layered salt and plums one on top of the other. On the third day I added a little vinegar. The plums from my aunt's field have thick skins.

安西あんざいさんの娘むすめさんは十九歳じゅうきゅうさいの大学生だいがくせいだった。瓶びんの洗あらい方かたから見みせたところ、手てが私わたしより速はやかった。教おしえるというより、二人ふたりで同おなじ仕事しごとをしているだけだった。案外あんがい、私わたしが言いうことは多おおくなかった。

Anzai-san's daughter turned out to be a nineteen-year-old university student. When I started by showing how to wash the jars, her hands were quicker than mine. Rather than teaching, the two of us were simply doing the same job. Unexpectedly, there was little for me to say.

雨あめの多おおい時期じきが終おわらないうちに、梅うめを干ほす日ひを決きめなければならない。本ほんを見みながら私わたしが言いうと、娘むすめさんは祖母そぼから聞きいたやり方かたを知しっていた。習ならったのは、たぶん私わたしのほうだった。今年ことしの正月しょうがつに叔母おばへ送おくる瓶びんは、店みせでは買かわない。二人ふたりで漬つけた瓶びんが八やっつ、日ひの当あたる場所ばしょに並ならんでいる。

Before the rainy stretch of the year ends, the day for drying the plums in the sun has to be decided. I said so while looking at the book, and the daughter already knew the method she had heard from her grandmother. The one doing the learning was probably me. The jar I send my aunt this New Year will not be bought at a shop. The eight jars the two of us pickled are lined up in a sunny spot.
