Since moving to this town five years ago I have taken part in the clearing of the riverbank that happens twice a year. The number of people taking part goes down every time. This time I bought a 20,000-yen machine for cutting grass, because I wanted to be of use. Getting up early in the morning is a nuisance, but we gathered at eight on a cloudy morning.

Miyashita-san, the team leader, decides the roles. When I said I had brought a machine, Miyashita-san said, "The slope of the bank has a lot of stones, and there is a danger of it sending stones flying." I was asked to take the flat ground at the top. I could not help being a little disappointed. I did not complain.

Counting me there were three people cutting grass, and five carrying the cut grass away in bundles. I finished the flat ground in thirty minutes and cut two more patches after that. While the machine's work finished early, the people carrying bundles were going back and forth from the river to the road again and again. The grass came up to the knee.

By eleven the cutting was finished, but the carrying was not. I put the machine down and carried bundles. Every time I picked up a bundle my hands turned red from the grass. Because I had brought the machine, everyone had me down as the machine person, and at first nobody would hand me a bundle.
昼 まで運 んで、無事 に終 わった。疲 れは機械 を使 った時間 より束 のほうが大 きい。宮下 さんは「来年 は運 ぶ人 をもっと呼 ぶべきだ来年 は運 ぶ人 をもっと呼 ぶべきだ Next year we ought to call in more carriers.」と言 った。私 は機械 を公民館 に置 いてきた。次 に使 う人 はだれでもいい。役 に立 ったのは、買 った機械 ではなかった。
訳 English
We carried until midday and it ended without incident. The tiredness from the bundles is greater than from the time I spent with the machine. Miyashita-san said, "Next year we ought to call in more carriers." I left the machine at the community hall. Whoever uses it next is fine by me. What turned out to be of use was not the machine I bought.
