My university friend's wedding was at eleven on Sunday, in Niigata. Flights and the bullet train were expensive, so I chose the Saturday-night overnight bus. Before departure, the weather forecast was warning that there was a risk of heavy snow in the mountains. Even so, I thought I would arrive at six in the morning, just as scheduled.

My seat on the bus was the very back one. We left Tokyo at eleven and for about two hours it went smoothly. I tried to sleep, but between the snoring of the passenger in front and the cold coming off the window, I could not sleep in the least. When I opened the curtain, it was white outside. The snow was still falling.

Just past two, the bus pulled into a service area and stopped. "The expressway has been closed due to the snow. Please wait until it reopens," the driver said. A stop that was meant to be a short rest had still not ended three hours later. On top of that the kiosk was shut, so I could not even buy a hot drink.

At eleven I sat on a bench in the service area, looking one by one at the photos another friend was sending me. All day long, my heart was far more tired than my body.

The expressway opened at two in the afternoon. I reached the venue at four, and the ceremony and the photographs were long over. When my friend saw me he came running and pointed at a table in the corner of the hall. One seat with a name card on it, the food still untouched, had been left there. "Sit down and eat. You can deal with being tired tomorrow," he said.
