N3 consolidation story #161. The narrator has marked Japanese papers for a correspondence course for three years, forty at a time. Three weeks after one batch he notices that the answer key on his desk was the one replaced in April, and that the papers have long since gone back to the students. Nobody would ever have found out. Patterns: 〜ことになっている, 〜せいで, 〜ようとする, 〜しかない, 〜わけではない, 〜ずに.

A correspondence-education company asks me to mark exam papers. Twice a month about forty papers arrive in an envelope. The marking has to be sent back within three days of the papers arriving. It is Japanese for middle-school students, at three hundred yen a paper. I have been doing it for three years, so having this work had come to be something I took for granted.

六月ろくがつの終おわりの依頼いらいで、私わたしは古ふるい解答例かいとうれいを使つかってしまった。問題もんだいは四月しがつに新あたらしくなっていた。机つくえの上うえの古ふるい紙かみをそのまま見みていたせいで、四十枚よんじゅうまい全部ぜんぶの点てんが違ちがっていた。気きがついたのは三週間さんしゅうかん後ごで、次つぎの封筒ふうとうに新あたらしい解答例かいとうれいが入はいっていたからだ。

On the job at the end of June I used the old answer key. The questions had been changed in April. Because I had gone on looking at the old sheet on my desk, the marks on all forty papers were wrong. I only noticed three weeks later, when a new answer key came in the next envelope.

直なおそうとしたが、答案とうあんはもう生徒せいとの家いえに返かえっていた。誰だれにも言いわないで、次つぎからきちんとやることもできた。私わたしの間違まちがいに気きがつく人ひとは、たぶんいない。それでも、相手あいては四十人よんじゅうにんの中学生ちゅうがくせいとその親おやだと考かんがえた。電話でんわをかけるしかない、と思おもった。

I tried to correct them, but the papers had already gone back to the students' homes. I could have said nothing to anyone and simply done it properly from then on. There is probably nobody who would notice my mistake. Even so, I thought about who the other party really was: forty middle-school students and their parents. There is nothing for it but to ring them, I thought.

金曜日きんようびの午後ごご、会社かいしゃに電話でんわをした。あいにく担当たんとうの方かたは席せきにいなくて、夕方ゆうがたにかけ直なおした。慌あわてないように、日付ひづけと枚数まいすうを先さきに言いった。長ながい説明せつめいはしなかった。担当たんとうの方かたはしばらく黙だまっていた。それから、こちらで採点さいてんし直なおしますと言いった。責せめられたわけではない。規則きそくのとおり、同おなじ内容ないようを書面しょめんでも送おくった。

On Friday afternoon I rang the company. As it happened the person in charge was not at their desk, so I rang again in the early evening. So as not to rush, I gave the date and the number of sheets first. I did not make a long explanation. The person in charge was silent for a while. Then they said that the marking would be done again at their end. It is not that I was blamed. As the rules require, I sent the same account in writing as well.

Two weeks later the request for the next term did not come. I have not been told why. In three years it is the first time. All that stays with me is that I hung up without making excuses. Work that handles exam papers is work that finds other people's mistakes. Finding my own took three weeks. These days I weigh the word responsibility in sheets of paper.
