Just after eleven the automatic door opened and a family of three came in: a father, a mother, and a girl of about primary school age. All three were wet through to their shoes, and the floor was dirty with water at once. They asked for a room for the night, but with no rooms left I had no choice but to refuse. I phoned four nearby hotels; none of them had anything free.

Our rules say that anyone who is not a staying guest has to leave the lobby at midnight. Doing nothing but staring at the manual produced no answer. Outside the rain was coming in sideways, and there was no way that child could walk through it. I could not help handing them towels. Then I decided to let them spend the night in the chairs, and brought them hot tea. As you would expect of an old hotel, the lobby chairs are large and deep. The girl fell asleep at around one.

At six I handed over to the day-shift member of staff and passed on the situation with the family, but I stayed on in the office to write up my report. When the trains started running at seven, the three of them bowed again and again and left. At nine that day the manager called me in. If you leave people who are not staying in the lobby, he said, we cannot take responsibility if anything happens; it is a rule to be kept without exception. I apologised, but I thought that if the same night came round again I would do the same thing.

What became of that family afterwards is not in any record either — they never stayed as guests.
