訳 English

The town I was born in had a small line: seven kilometres, only four stations. It had run for more than sixty years, but it was decided that it would close this August. I spent my three high-school years on that line. Honestly, it is not that I was especially fond of it. It was slow, there were few services, and all I ever did was complain.

English

The final day was a Sunday. I took four hours from Tokyo and arrived at 3:40 in the afternoon. Almost all the shops in front of the station had changed, and I was a little surprised. The platform was full of people with cameras. Locals, on the other hand, were few. I bought one ticket, meaning to watch the view from the window all the way to the end of the line.

English

The 5:12 final train came in. The instant the doors opened, people poured in. The seats filled straight away and people stood in the aisle too. It was the first time I had ever seen this line crowded. Three cameras were lined up in front of the window, and I could see nothing of the view outside.

English

At the second station, I got off. It was the station nearest my high school. The clock said 5:25. It is four kilometres to the house. Before it got dark, I started walking the road that runs along the line. It is the road I walked again and again as a high-school student when I missed the train. The corner by the rice shop and the bridge over the river were both as they had always been.

English

At around 6:10 I heard the final train coming back behind me. I watched it go from the middle of the paddy fields. The lights of the windows grew distant one by one, and even after the sound had gone, I had the feeling I could still hear the track. I reached the house at 6:30. The ticket I never rode to the end of the line is in my wallet; I did not throw it away. Every time I look at that town on a map, I still find myself searching for the white line.
