Even so, in a flat where I live alone, there was nobody to go but me.

About forty residents gathered in the car park. A man from the fire station explained how to use an extinguisher. Pull the pin, point the hose at the fire, squeeze the lever. We took turns trying it with a practice extinguisher filled with water. When my turn came, because of my nerves I could not squeeze the lever properly. There was a small laugh behind me.

After that we learned how to use a stretcher too. Two people hold up a heavy dummy and carry it. I was paired with Matsumoto from my floor, but that day was the first time we had ever spoken. We also practised going outside by the emergency stairs, and we were taught that an extinguisher is kept beside the stairs on every floor. The drill ended at eleven. Two hours was long. I did not think a day would come when it would be of use.

Ten days later, at night, the smell of smoke woke me. My flat is on the eighth floor; when I stepped into the corridor, the door of a flat on the floor below was open and white smoke was coming out. The man who lives there is elderly, and it seems he had fallen asleep with a pot still on the heat. Before I could think, I ran to the side of the stairs. I knew where the extinguisher was kept because I remembered it from the drill.

When I reached the floor below, Matsumoto was already there. The fire was small, and in fact it went out simply by turning off the gas. The extinguisher was not needed after all. Even so, that night neither Matsumoto nor I hesitated. Matsumoto held the man up and brought him out into the corridor, and I opened the window and let the smoke out. It was hardly what you would call an evacuation, but the fact that the two of us moved the same way was definitely thanks to the drill. Later the caretaker told me that the same kind of pot fire has happened three times in five years, and it made sense to me. I now think every resident ought to handle an extinguisher at least once. I decided to attend next year as well. Even when I stay at a hotel on a trip, I cannot help checking where the extinguisher is.
