Before you read — make your own sentences
- Notice たびに + たものだ working together in paragraphs 3–4: 夏休みになるたびに来た (whenever summer came, I'd come) sets up 毎日泳いだものだ (I used to swim every day) — both point back to a repeated past habit.
- 確かに (paragraph 5) concedes a point before contrasting it — 年を取ったと感じたが、確かに元気そうだった = 'she seemed to have aged, but she certainly looked well.' Watch for this 'yes, but' shape.
- Optional: すなわち in paragraph 6 restates 日課 as 畑仕事 — track how it's used to define a word with a more specific one.
