Your N3 story #16 — 7 new patterns (recognition only). A weekend camping trip is threatened by uncertain weather, and the narrator has to decide whether to go ahead anyway. New patterns: せいぜい, しばらく, しかない, そのために, それとも, そうもない／そうにない, すでに.

Before you read — make your own sentences

Notice それとも linking two alternative questions in paragraph 2 — 行く？それとも延期する？ = go, or postpone?
Contrast そうもない／そうにない (paragraph 1, 'unlikely to') with しかない (paragraph 6, 'no choice but to') — one hedges about the future, the other closes off options entirely.
Optional: find 天気 and 予定 each appearing more than once — track how the narrator's plan (予定) survives the uncertain weather (天気).

今週こんしゅうの週末しゅうまつ、友達ともだちの田中たなかさんと山やまでキャンプをする予定よていだった。しかし、天気予報てんきよほうを見みると、天気てんきは晴はれそうにない。土曜日どようびも日曜日にちようびも雨あめのマークがついている。

This week's weekend, I had planned to go camping in the mountains with my friend Tanaka. But when I checked the weather forecast, the weather didn't look like it was going to clear up. Both Saturday and Sunday had rain marks on them.

それで、田中たなかさんにメッセージを送おくった。「予定よてい通どおりキャンプに行いく？それとも、来週らいしゅうに延期えんきする？」

So I sent Tanaka a message: 'Should we go camping as planned? Or should we postpone it to next week?'

返事へんじをしばらく待まったが、なかなか来こなかった。待まっている間あいだに、近ちかくの店みせへ雨具あまぐを買かいに行いった。小ちいさな店みせなので、傘かさはせいぜい三本さんぼんだけだった。

I waited a while for a reply, but it didn't come easily. While waiting, I went to a nearby store to buy rain gear. Since it was a small store, there were at most three umbrellas.

大切たいせつなキャンプ道具どうぐを濡ぬらしたくなかった。そのために、大おおきいレインカバーを買かった。

I didn't want to get our important camping gear wet. For that reason, I bought a big rain cover.

店みせを出でると、田中たなかさんからすでに返事へんじが来きていた。「予定よてい通どおり行いこう。キャンプ場じょうはもう予約よやくしてあるよ。」

When I left the store, a reply from Tanaka had already come in. 'Let's go as planned. The campsite is already reserved.'

天気てんきはまだ心配しんぱいだったが、キャンプ場じょうはもう予約よやくしてあるし、お金かねも払はらってしまった。行いくしかない。

I was still worried about the weather, but the campsite was already reserved and I'd already paid the money. There was nothing to do but go.

週末しゅうまつ、山やまに着つくと、幸さいわい雨あめは降ふらなかった。天気予報てんきよほうは外はずれて、二人ふたりはキャンプを十分じゅうぶんに楽たのしんだ。

On the weekend, when we arrived at the mountain, fortunately it didn't rain. The weather forecast was wrong, and the two of us thoroughly enjoyed the camping trip.
