An everyday story about noticing a credit card is missing, phoning to freeze it, reporting the loss, and arranging a reissue. Recycles six N3 grammar points at spaced intervals: 〜ざるをえない, 〜だけあって, 〜おそれがある, 〜べきだ, 〜に違いない, and 〜ずに.

Before you read — make your own sentences

Say you have no choice but to do something using 〜ざるをえない (例:紛失を認めざるをえない).
State what someone ought to do with 〜べきだ (例:すぐにカードを停止するべきだ).
Say you did something without doing another with 〜ずに (例:慌てずに手続きをした).

On the way back from shopping, when I checked inside my wallet, the credit card that should always be there was gone, and I had no choice but to admit that I had lost it.

I tried to recall where I had dropped it, and figured I must have dropped it inside the train I had just ridden.

If I left it as it was, there was a risk someone would misuse it, so first, without panicking, I decided that I should contact the card company and suspend the card's use right away.

電話でんわでは、カードの番号ばんごうや本人ほんにんを証明しょうめいする情報じょうほうを聞きかれたが、大手おおての会社かいしゃだけあって、対応たいおうがとても早はやく、数分すうふんで停止ていしの手続てつづきが終おわった。

On the phone they asked for the card number and information to verify my identity, but as you would expect of a major company, their response was very fast, and the suspension procedure was finished in a few minutes.

そのあと、再発行さいはっこうの申込書もうしこみしょに住所じゅうしょや名前なまえを記入きにゅうし、利用りよう明細めいさいに身みに覚おぼえのない金額きんがくがないか確認かくにんした。

After that, I filled in my address and name on the reissue application form, and checked the usage statement to make sure there were no amounts I didn't recognize.
