Your eighth N3 story — 7 new points (recognition only). You start your first part-time job at a cafe, learn the shop's rules, and get a surprise about a strict senior. New patterns: ことになっている, ことはない, ことは〜が, くらい／ぐらい, くせに, まるで, まさか.

Grammar

ことになっている

It's a rule/arrangement that ~; you're supposed to ~ (not your own decision).

verb dict form ＋ことになっている

学校がっこうでは制服せいふくを着きることになっている。

At school, we are required to wear uniforms.

ことはない

There's no need to ~.

verb dict form ＋ことはない

心配しんぱいすることはない。

There's no need to worry.

ことは〜が

~ is indeed so, but… (grudging concession).

adj/verb ＋ことは＋ (same) ＋が

行いくことは行いくが、すぐ帰かえる。

I will go, but I'll come back right away.

くらい／ぐらい

About / approximately; to the extent of ~.

quantity / noun ＋くらい（ぐらい）

一時間いちじかんくらい待まちました。

I waited about an hour.

くせに

Even though / and yet (with blame or criticism).

plain form ＋くせに

知しっているくせに、教おしえてくれない。

Even though he knows, he won't tell me.

まるで

Just like / exactly as if ~ (usually with のようだ).

まるで＋ … ＋のようだ

まるで夢ゆめのようだ。

It's just like a dream.

まさか

No way; surely not; you can't be serious.

Before you read — make your own sentences

Notice how ことになっている marks a rule/expectation (what you're 'supposed to' do), not a personal decision (ことにする).
Spot the contrast: くせに means 'even though' but adds a complaint or blame — stronger than plain のに.
Optional: read the まるで sentence aloud and notice it pairs with 〜のようだ ('just like ~').

先月せんげつから、駅前えきまえのカフェでアルバイトを始はじめました。私わたしにとって、初はじめてのアルバイトです。
