A short everyday story about sending an international parcel at the post office: filling out the customs form, weighing the package, comparing cost and delivery time, and adding insurance. Recycles six N3 grammar points at spaced intervals: 〜ことはない, 〜しかない, をはじめ, 〜得る, 〜にほかならない, and 〜というより.

On the customs documents, you must write in detail the destination, the weight of the contents, and so on, starting with the sender.

重おもさによって料金りょうきんが決きまる。国際こくさい便びんは高たかいというより、安全あんぜんのための費用ひようだと言いえる。荷物にもつは輸送ゆそう中ちゅうに壊こわれ得うるので、保険ほけんをつけておくと安心あんしんだ。

訳 English

The fee is decided by weight. Rather than saying international mail is expensive, you could say it's a cost for safety. Since a parcel can break during transport, it's reassuring to add insurance.

中身なかみの説明せつめいにまちがいがあって、係かかりの人ひとが「ここは修正しゅうせいするしかないですね」と言いった。

訳 English

There was a mistake in the description of the contents, and the clerk said, "We have no choice but to correct this here."

でも、そんなに心配しんぱいすることはないと言いわれた。この郵便局ゆうびんきょくは速はやさより安全あんぜんを重視じゅうししているので、配達はいたつは一いっ週間しゅうかんほどかかるそうだ。

訳 English

But I was told there's no need to worry so much. This post office places importance on safety over speed, so delivery apparently takes about a week.

小包こづつみを無事ぶじに送おくれたのは、丁寧ていねいに手伝てつだってくれた係かかりの人ひとのおかげにほかならない。

訳 English

That I was able to send the parcel safely is nothing other than thanks to the clerk who helped me so carefully.
