Before you read — make your own sentences
- Notice さえ (even ~, paragraph 1) vs さえ〜ば (if only ~, last paragraph) — さえ alone emphasizes an extreme example; さえ〜ば adds a conditional 'if only that were true.'
- Find 際に (paragraph 2, arriving) and 最中に (paragraph 4, mid-cooking) — both mean 'when/while', but 際に marks a point in time, 最中に stresses being interrupted right in the middle of an action.
- Optional: さて (paragraph 6) is a pure discourse marker — it doesn't attach to a verb or noun, it just signals 'well, moving on' at the start of a sentence.
