Before you read — make your own sentences

Notice さえ (even ~, paragraph 1) vs さえ〜ば (if only ~, last paragraph) — さえ alone emphasizes an extreme example; さえ〜ば adds a conditional 'if only that were true.'
Find 際に (paragraph 2, arriving) and 最中に (paragraph 4, mid-cooking) — both mean 'when/while', but 際に marks a point in time, 最中に stresses being interrupted right in the middle of an action.
Optional: さて (paragraph 6) is a pure discourse marker — it doesn't attach to a verb or noun, it just signals 'well, moving on' at the start of a sentence.

先週せんしゅうの週末しゅうまつ、友達ともだち三人さんにんとキャンプに行いった。天気てんき予報よほうさえ、「明日あしたは一日中いちにちじゅう晴はれる」と言いっていたのに、朝あさから空そらは少すこし曇くもっていた。

Last weekend, I went camping with three friends. Even the weather forecast had said "Tomorrow will be sunny all day," yet the sky was a little cloudy from the morning.

キャンプ場じょうに到着とうちゃくした際さいに、雲くもがもっと増ふえていて、少すこし心配しんぱいになった。でも、みんなはまだ元気げんきいっぱいだった。

When we arrived at the campsite, the clouds had increased even more, and I became a little worried. But everyone was still full of energy.

テントを立たてたり、火ひを起おこしたりして、キャンプの準備じゅんびを進すすめた。準備じゅんびが終おわるころには、もうお腹なかが空すいていた。

We pitched the tent, started a fire, and got the camp ready. By the time we finished preparing, we were already hungry.

夕食ゆうしょくのカレーを作つくっている最中さいちゅうに、ぽつぽつと雨あめが降ふり始はじめた。

雨あめのせいで、楽たのしみにしていた花火大会はなびたいかいは中止ちゅうしになった。とても残念ざんねんだった。

Because of the rain, the fireworks display we had been looking forward to was cancelled. It was very disappointing.

それでも、みんなで笑わらいながら宿やどに向むかった。雨あめさえ降ふらなければ、もっと楽たのしいキャンプになっただろうと思おもうが、この失敗しっぱいも良よい思い出おもいでだ。

Even so, we all laughed together as we headed to the inn. I think if only it hadn't rained, it would have been an even more fun camping trip, but this failure is also a good memory.
