A short everyday story about going to a mobile-phone shop to change your phone and plan, and talking with the staff about contracts and fees. Recycles six N3 grammar points at spaced intervals: 〜にかけて, 〜たところ, 〜どころか, 〜において, 〜かのようだ, and 〜たものだ.

Grammar

〜にかけて

from ~ through ~; over (a span of time or place)

名詞から名詞＋にかけて

先月せんげつから今月こんげつにかけて忙いそがしかった。

I was busy from last month through this month.

〜たところ

when ~; upon doing ~ (and then found)

動詞た形＋ところ

店みせに行いったところ、閉しまっていた。

When I went to the shop, it was closed.

〜どころか

far from ~; not only not ~ but the opposite

普通形／名詞＋どころか

安やすくなるどころか、高たかくなった。

Far from getting cheaper, it got more expensive.

〜において

in ~; at ~; in the field/context of ~

名詞＋において

この会議かいぎにおいて大切たいせつなことを決きめた。

We decided something important in this meeting.

〜かのようだ

as if ~; as though ~ (though not actually so)

普通形＋かのようだ

彼かれは全すべて知しっているかのように話はなした。

He spoke as if he knew everything.

〜たものだ

used to ~; would often ~ (nostalgic recollection)

動詞た形＋ものだ

昔むかしはよく遊あそんだものだ。

Before you read — make your own sentences

Describe a span from one time through another with 〜にかけて (例:先月から今月にかけて携帯の調子が悪かった).
Say that far from X, the opposite happened with 〜どころか (例:料金は安くなるどころか高くなった).
Say what you used to do in the past with 〜たものだ (例:昔は機種変更に何時間もかかったものだ).

先月せんげつから今月こんげつにかけて、携帯けいたいの調子ちょうしがとても悪わるくなり、そろそろ機種変更きしゅへんこうをしようと考かんがえていた。

From last month through this month, my phone's condition got really bad, so I had been thinking it was about time to change the model.

駅前えきまえの携帯けいたいショップに行いったところ、店員てんいんさんがしきりに新あたらしい機種きしゅを勧すすめてきた。

When I went to the phone shop in front of the station, the clerk kept recommending a new model over and over.

ところが、料金りょうきんを計算けいさんしてもらうと、安やすくなるどころか、割引わりびきが終おわって前まえより高たかくなりそうだった。

However, when they calculated the fees for me, far from getting cheaper, the discount was ending and it looked like it would become more expensive than before.

そこで、この店みせにおいて支払しはらいの方法ほうほうがいくつあるのか、店員てんいんさんに詳くわしく説明せつめいしてもらった。

So I had the clerk explain to me in detail how many payment methods there were at this shop.

店員てんいんさんは、まるで契約けいやくの全すべてを知しっているかのように、直じかに細こまかい手続てつづきの流ながれを教おしえてくれた。

The clerk, as if she knew everything about the contract, directly taught me the flow of the detailed procedures.

昔むかしは機種変更きしゅへんこうに何時間なんじかんもかかったものだが、今いまは料金りょうきんも支払しはらいも画面がめんですぐに確認かくにんできて便利べんりになった。

訳 English

Long ago, changing your phone model used to take many hours, but now the fees and payments can be checked right away on the screen, which has become convenient.
