ところが午前中ごぜんちゅうは、品物しなものが売うれるどころか、客きゃくもほとんど来こなかった。隣となりの店みせの人ひとに「値段ねだんは先さきに決きめておくべきだよ」と言いわれた。

訳 English

However, in the morning, far from selling, the goods hardly drew any customers. The person at the next stall told me, "You should decide your prices in advance."

午後ごごになると、急きゅうに客きゃくが増ふえた。ある女性じょせいが古ふるい鞄かばんを見みて、「値段ねだんのわりには状態じょうたいが優すぐれているね」と言いった。

訳 English

In the afternoon, customers suddenly increased. One woman looked at an old bag and said, "For its price, it's in great condition."

その女性じょせいは値切ねぎろうとしたが、わたしは値札ねふだを付つけたまま売うった。少すこしも引ひかなかったが、筋すじが通とおっていたので納得なっとくしてくれた。

訳 English

That woman tried to haggle, but I sold it with the price tag still on. I didn't come down even a little, but my reasoning made sense, so she accepted it.

夕方ゆうがた、店みせを片付かたづけた。もうけは少すこなかったが、楽たのしかった。これは商売しょうばいではなく、趣味しゅみの一いちつにすぎないのだ。

In the evening, I tidied up the stall. The profit was small, but it was fun. This is not a business — it's nothing more than one of my hobbies.
