Before you read — make your own sentences
- Notice ところが (paragraph 1) marking an unexpected turn — the cake shop being closed forces a change of plan. Compare with とは限らない (paragraph 6), which softens a generalization rather than describing one surprising event.
- Track 通りに (paragraph 2, following grandmother's exact instructions) versus として (paragraph 4, taking on the role of 'cook') — 通りに matches a method, として marks a role or capacity.
- Find 通す (paragraph 3, やり通した = carried through to the end) and つい (paragraph 7, つい味見をしてしまった = accidentally tasted many times) — one is deliberate persistence, the other is unintentional.
