I make it a rule to take a walk every morning.。 As she got older, her walking slowed down.
English
Hana is a fourteen-year-old dog, and it has been thirteen years since she came to us. I make it a rule to walk to the river at six every morning. When she was young she walked ahead of me, but as she got older she dropped behind, and since last year she has started taking a rest partway. Even so, she loves the walk as much as ever, and stands up the moment she hears the door.
She looked as if she had no energy.。 I could not help thinking about her last day.。
訳 English
At the start of last month, Hana began leaving her hard food. She would eat soft things, but the amount was going down. She sat down more often during the walk, and she looked as if nothing interested her. At night, after the family had gone to bed, I kept reading about how long dogs live. Every time I saw the figure fourteen, I could not help thinking about her last day.
Out of sheer worry, I could not make the call.、二週間 も電話 をかけられなかった。
English
I knew I only had to go to the animal clinic. And yet, out of sheer worry, I could not bring myself to phone for two weeks. I was not ready to hear bad news. In the meantime I sat beside Hana, spending the days as though counting the time she had left. I thought of it as affection; looking back, I was simply afraid.
He was a young vet who had just arrived.
English
Last Friday I finally braced myself and took her in. The one who examined her was a young vet who had only arrived this spring, and my first impression was that he was not up to it. But in five minutes he opened Hana's mouth and pointed at a back tooth. The root had gone bad, and biting caused her pain. That, he said, was why she would not eat hard food and did not want to walk. It is not something that threatens her life, he told me.
English
The operation was over in thirty minutes without trouble. Four days later Hana ate all of her hard food, and in the morning she walked ahead of me. I was glad, but once I got home I felt a little sad. For that whole month I had been watching my own worry rather than Hana's pain. Better to walk to the river together than to count the time that is left. This morning too we went out at six.
