How the test finds your level
You start with an N4 question. Answer it right and the next one is N3; answer it wrong and the next one is N5. After 15 questions your level is the hardest one where you got at least two thirds right, so it settles where the questions stop being easy for you instead of averaging across the whole range. Nothing is generated while you take it: every question was written and checked in advance.
JLPT level test FAQ
How does the JLPT level test work?
You answer 15 multiple-choice questions on vocabulary, grammar and kanji readings. The first question is N4. A right answer makes the next question one level harder, a wrong answer makes it one level easier. Your estimated level is the hardest level where you answered at least two thirds of the questions correctly.
How accurate is this level test?
It is a quick placement check, not an exam. It only tests vocabulary, grammar and kanji readings, not listening or reading comprehension, and we have not validated it against official JLPT results. Use it to decide where to start studying, not as proof of your level.
Is this the official JLPT?
No. This test is independent of the JLPT organisers and gives you no certificate. The official JLPT is held twice a year and is the only way to get an official N5 to N1 result.
How long does the test take?
About five minutes. There is no time limit per question, and you do not need an account or an email address.
What should I do after I get my level?
Study at that level: read graded stories and practise grammar for it, and use the free grammar checker to get your own Japanese sentences corrected. You can retake the test any time; each test draws different questions from a large bank.
